MEL HENDERSON MEMORIAL SHOWCASE: KENNEDY, MARIST, MONTCLAIR IMMACULATE, ST. JOSEPH, HACKENSACK AND RUTGERS PREP ALL WIN!
Hackensack H.S. Hackensack, N.J…… The 5th Annual Mel Henderson Memorial Showcase took place Saturday and had six games that saw Marist, Kennedy, St. Joseph, Montclair Immaculate, Hackensack and Rytgers Prep come away with victories!
MARIST 89 DON BOSCO PREP 81 2OT
In the best game of the day, Marist and Don Bosco Prep battled through a double overtime before Marist prevailed! Senior Manny Toha scored 36 points and Junior Mike Jackson hit a 35 foot “triple” to send the game into double overtime as Marist won 89-81! The game had many twist and turns as Don Bosco Sophomore Aaron Carter hit a “triple” in the corner to send the game to it’s first overtime at 62! Prep seemed to have secured the game, but Jackson then hit a “triple” with no time on the clock to send it into the second! Toha continued to make buckets throughout the contest, finishing it off with 6 points to end it! Prep was led by Freshman Akil Watson with 23 points and Senior Myles Ruth who scored 22 points and dished out 8 assists! Senior Brendan Mykalcio chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds! Toha and Ruth were chosen Player of the Game!(With Basketball Spotlight Director Mike Melton)
KENNEDY 72 DWIGHT-MORROW 61
Senior Deishon Harrison scored 19 points and dished out 8 assists and Senior Jalen Hargrove added 13 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lift Kennedy to a 72-61 win over Dwight-Morrow! Sophomore Jay’Quan Briggs chipped in 14 points and Senior Mark Heber finished with 9! Senior Andres Fulgencio led Dwight-Morrow with a game high 30 points! Hargrove and Fulgencio were chosen Players of the Game!
MONTCLAIR IMMACULATE 63 PAYNE TECH 49
Junior Amar’e Marshall scored all 19 of his points in the second half as Montclair Immaculate overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Payne Tech 63-49! Tech led 29-24 at the half, but Immaculate put a full court press on in the second half that rattled Payne Tech into costly turnovers! The press was keyed by Senior Donta Davis who had 5 steals and 8 points as Immaculate went on a 20-7 3rd quarter run! Senior Zion Bethea and Junior Jayden Brown each scored 10 points in the contest! Senior Daniel Oravibiere led Payne Tech with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots and Senior Sultan Sharif added 15 points and 8 rebounds! Marshall and Oravibiere were chosen Players of the Game!
ST. JOSEPH REGIONAL 89 PLEASANTVILLE 67
Senior Malcolm Capers came off the bench and exploded for 29 points and Junior Daniel Lans added 12 points and 10 assists to lead St. Joe’s to a 89-67 win over Pleasantville! St. Joe’s took a 42-26 lead at the half as Capers scored 20 of his points! Senior Dyree Rogers scored 16 points, Senior Nazir Williams added 14 points and Senior Ansley Almanor chipped in 11 points and 9 rebounds! Junior Elijah Jones led Pleasantville with 25 points and 14 rebounds! Capers and Jones were chosen Players of the Game!
HACKENSACK 67 TEANECK 59
Senior Amire Walker scored 23 points and Senior Cameron Taylor added 18 points and 9 rebounds to lead Hackensack to a 67-59 win over Teaneck! Teaneck led by as much as 15 early but Hackensack slow walked them down to eventually tie it at 45 to end the 3rd quarter! Hackensack took it’s first lead 50-47 on a”triple” from Sophomore Shawn Reckley with 6:30 seconds left in the game! Reckley and Senior Seth Brown each finished with 10 points and Brown also grabbed 14 rebounds! Junior Kris Edwards led Teaneck with 17 points, while Sophomore David Teele added 13 points and Junior D.J. Simpson finished with 12! Walker and Edwards were chosen Players of the Game!
RUTGERS PREP 64 PLAINFIELD 51
Sophomore Otega Oweh scored 18 points and Junior Noah Harris and Junior Trey Patterson scored 16 points apiece to lead Rutgers Prep to a hard fought 64-51 win over Plainfield! Senior Nico Gallette added 13 points and 7 rebounds! Plainfield led at the end of 3 44-43, but was outscored 21-7 in the 4th quarter! Patterson scored all of his 16 in the second half! Junior Doron Montgomery led Plainfield with 13 points and Sophomore Jamarques Lawrence added 10! Harris and Montgomery were chosen Players of the Game!
