St. Anthony, Hudson Catholic And St. Joseph Metuchen Win In S.F.I.C. Festival!

Written by Cameron on . Posted in Garden State Hoops

Kean College Union, N.J……Some of the top teams in the State competed in the Scholarship Fund For Inner-City Children( S.F.I.C.) Basketball Festival, including #1 ranked St. Anthony! The Friars and Hudson Catholic won their games easily, while St. Joe’s Metuchen and Seton Hall Prep had a classic battle to the end!

                                         St. Joseph(Metuchen) 61      Seton Hall Prep  59

This contest pitted #4 ranked Seton Hall Prep against #7 ranked St. Joseph of Metuchen! The game was played at a high level and neither team gave an inch! No lead was as much as 4 and the 4th quarter was a nail biter, especially the final 5:00 minutes! Senior Dan Brix jumper put Joe’s ahead 53-51 with 5:10 left but Senior Kelly Willoughby’s layup tied it up for Prep! Temple commit Quentin DeCosey, who was outstanding throughout hit two free throws to put Joe’s up 55-53 but Hofstra commit Dallas Anglin tied it with a layup and Junior Tom Lacey scored a basket  off a beautiful feed from Junior Spencer Weisz to pull Prep ahead 57-55! But a”triple” by Decosey for Joe’s and a free throw by Weisz evened the score at 58! A free throw by Senior Stephon Mosley put Seton Hall Prep up 59-58 but DeCosey’s short jumper with 18 seconds left put Joe’s up one 60-59 and after a missed Prep shot Brix was fouled with 10 seconds left! He missed the attempt, but 6’10 Freshman Karl Towns pulled down the offensive rebound and Brix then converted the final point from the stripe! A desperation attempt at the end didn’t fall and Joe’s escaped with the win! DeCosey(top right) finished the game with 33 points and 10 rebounds and 5 assists, while Brix and Senior Karim Awad each added 8 points! Towns(left) added 9 boards and two”triples” to the contest! Anglin led Prep with 18 points, Mosley 16 and Weisz 13!

                                    HUDSON CATHOLIC  84         ST. JOSEPH(MONTVALE)  52

Junior’s Reggie Cameron and Mike Young  each had a double-double in #8 ranked Hudson Catholic’s 84-52 win over St. Joseph of Montvale! Cameron(right) and Young(left) each had 24 points and 10 rebounds as Joe’s had no answer for the duo! Junior Raekwon Kelly added 10 points, while Junior Kavon Stewart added 9 points and 8 assists! Freshman Nassir Barrino added 5 assists and 3 steals to the output! The Hawks led 38-23 at the half and never looked back! St. Joe’s was led by Junior Terrance McNair with 16 points and 3 steals and Senior Dan McKinless with 10 points and 4 assists!

                                              ST.ANTHONY  77           ROSELLE CATHOLIC 28

The win was expected, but the relative ease wasn’t as the State’s #1 team St. Anthony beat #13 ranked Roselle Catholic 77-28! Roselle played without the services of one of the top Junior’s in the State in 6’8 Tyler Roberson who had to sit 30 days for his transfer! Rivals #2 ranked Senior in the Country Kyle Anderson had another one of his kind of games scoring 20 points, with 9 rebounds,8 dimes and 3 blocked shots! Junior Josh Brown added 14 points and 3 assists, Junior Hallice Cooke scored 11 with 3″triples” and Senior Tariq Carey scored 10 points with 4 dimes! Junior Eddie Harris led Roselle with 7 points while Stoney Brook commit Senior Jameel Warney grabbed 8 boards!

River Dell Overtakes Bergenfield In O.T. 39-36!

Written by Cameron on . Posted in Garden State Hoops

Bergenfield, N.J……… River Dell trailed for most of the game and with it being played at such a slow pace it seemed as if Bergenfield had control of the contest! However, trailing 28-20 at the end of the 3rd quarter River Dell played lights out defense and held the Bears to one field goal in the 4th quarter! They also benefitted from the fact that Junior Tim Barnes(Right) decided to takeover for the Hawks! Barnes finished with 20 of his teams 39 points and kept River Dell close enough to have his team make their push in the 39-36 win! The Hawks finally tied the game at 30 with 1:37 left in the 4th on a steal and layup by Ryan Duran! Neither team could score another basket and the game went into overtime! Barnes scored 6 of River Dell’s 9 points in overtime and finished the scoring with two free throws to give them the final score! A desperation “triple” by Bergenfield came up short! Duran finished with 10 points while Sean Boland had 9 boards! Barnes added 8 rebounds to his game stats! Bergenfield was led by Senior Corey White with 11 points and 9 rebounds and Senior Kevin Pineda with 7 points and 4 assists! The win kept River Dell undefeated at 5-0, while Bergenfield fell to 4-4!
