Written by Cameron on . Posted in Garden State Hoops

The Playaz 9th grade and Sports University 10th grade teams were the last standing as each won the chip in the We Got Next Tournament sponsored by the Playaz Basketball Club. The Playaz team had to go through the Playaz 8th grade team which was the surprise of the tournament by reaching the semifinals and the strong New Heights N.Y.C. team. They beat the 8th grade by a score of 65-26, although the game was close for a while in the 1st half. They then met up with New Heights who had defeated The Brooklyn Ballers 49-47  in their semifinal for the championship. The game showcased the balance of this strong team as they were led by Reggie Cameron (25pts) who was the tournament M.V.P in their 64-49 victory. He had plenty of help from his teammates as Kavon Stewart, Josh Marquez, Raekwon Kelly, Stephen McNair, Jordan Arthur and Christopher Myers all had their shining moments. Stewart in particular is establishing himself as the top 9th grade point guard in the state. The Playaz team captured it’s 10th chip of the year this weekend. Very impressive!  Sports University 10th grade team won their chip by first playing a hard fought game against The Playaz 10th grade squad, winning 67-60 in the semis as Rashad Andrews led the way with 16 points. They then went against Team Philly which got there by defeating New Heights 10th grade team 47-32. In a very physical contest, University won 45-38 behind tournament M.V.P. Matt Johnson. Notable 10th grade players who shined during the weekend  included The Playaz’s  Dallas Englin, Yuri Wright  and Chris Jones, New Heights Trey Dickerson and Jimmy Hall, Team Philly’s Amil Jefferson and Brandon Taylor, Hoop Heavens Dom Hoffman and University’s Jerome Fricke, Tyuan Williams and Jordan Quick. Notable 9th graders included, New Heights Jordan Washington and Jaleel Harris, Brooklyn Ballers Dashawn Mitchell and The Playaz 8th graders Nassir Barrino, Nadi Beciri and Isaiah Briscoe.
