Written by Cameron on . Posted in Garden State Hoops

Tenafly………Four more teams advanced in the Bergen County Jamboree as the quarterfinals matchups were set for next week! Teaneck, Tenafly, Don Bosco Prep and Hackensack all go to Ramapo College next Sunday!

                            Teaneck  54                 Elmwood Park  4

Elmwood Park gave a valiant effort, but Teaneck’s talent level is too high as they pulled off a 54-43 victory!  The Highwaymen didn’t play as well as usual, but some of it can be attributed to Elmwood Park! Sophomore Joel Hernandez(right) was Teaneck’s main threat with 19 points, while Junior Chris Jones added 16 points! The key for Teaneck was the play of Danta Davis off the bench! He came in and provided 9 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 3 shots! Elmwood Park’s star Senior Ryan Velez scored 24 points with 7 rebounds and Sophomore Andre Fraiser added 10!

                             Hackensack  56        Dwight Englewood  54

In a highly contested game Hackensack hung on to beat Dwight Englewood 56-54! With the game going back and forth throughout, Hackensack went on a spurt in the middle of the fourth behind the effort of Sophomore forward Gene Marshall who scored 10 of his 12 points in the 2nd half! Marshall(bottom right) scored two big put back layups in the run and Freshman Rashard Figures(top right) drained a big”triple” to help fight off Dwight Englewood! Junior Wes Dickinson had moments in the game where he dominated inside for D.E.! He scored 16 of his 24 points in the 2nd half and truth be told, probably could have gotten more! Senior Zack Hodges also played big for Dwight Englewood, scoring 19 points with 8 assists and 7 rebounds! Figures, proving to be one of the top young players in the area scored a game high 20 and grabbed 8 rebounds while Sophomore Chris Myers scored 9 points and had 6 dimes and Sophomore Jamiek Moore added 7 points and 6 rebounds for the Comets!

                                  Tenafly  59                  Ramapo  54

Late free throw shooting won this game for Tenafly! The game was another close contest as Tenafly held a slight lead which forced Ramapo to foul late! That’s when Senior Jimmy Trolice demonstrated some clutch shooting from the line! Trolice(right) went 13 for 18 and constantly held back Ramapo as they kept getting close behind the play of Senior guard Tyler Ward! Junior Chris Orozco(bottom right) led Tenafly with 20 points including making 12 free throws himself! He also grabbed 8 rebounds! Ward finished with 16 points and 6 assists and Senior B.J. Hunt  finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds for Ramapo!

Don Bosco Prep  69        Bergenfield  65

Don Bosco Prep had to rally in the 4th quarter to over take Bergenfield 69-65! Bergernfield came out ready to play as they shot 8 for 12, including 4 for 5″triples”in the 1st quarter to take a 20-10 lead! Junior Kevin Pineda and Junior Corey White shot the lights out early and Senior point guard Tarik Ragland ran the show for Bergenfield as they showed no intimidation! But Prep, which is an experienced team in this situation took the hit and slowly pulled back in the game! Junior Leonte Carroo(top right) came off the bench and took matters in his own hands! His effort on the boards gave Prep the extra effort it needed to tie the score at 48 by the end of the 3rd! Junior Jemal Mosley got to the basket in the 4th finding Senior Selwyn Maxwell in the lane or finishing himself! Junior Yuri Wright also provided some needed help on the ofensive and defensive end in the 4th quarter! Carroo finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Mosley(right) added 16 points and 4 assists! Ragland finished with 23 points and 7 assists, Pineda added 21 points, including 5″triples’ and White added 4″triples” and scored 14 points!

Notes: After seeing Bergenfield for the first time, was very impressed with their fearlessness and willingness to go hard! Ragland(right) is a strong point guard and Pineda(bottom right)and White(left) can stroke it! Not a very deep bench and in the end Bergenfield was just worn out from Prep’s defense and physical play!

DePaul’s Balanced Attack Beats St. Joseph 63-56!

Written by Cameron on . Posted in Garden State Hoops

Wayne………If DePaul Catholic plays the way they did against St. Joseph in their 63-56 win they are gonna be a”problem”for any team in the Passaic County Tournament! The Spartans had a balanced attack with three players in double figures and two others with 9 points! DePaul was led by Sophomore Joshua Marquez with 15 points and 6 assists! Freshman Kiy Hester finished with 12 points and 4 assists and Junior Mas Aronson(pictured) brought plenty of energy with his 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals! These guys not to mention Junior’s Davon Jacobs and Nafee Lighty who each scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds a piece gave the kind of effort that can take them a long way in the Counties! DePaul created 9 steals and forced a number of turnovers! St. Joe’s could never get it going consistently and could only rely on Sophomore Terrence McNair and Senior Michael Pelham for most of their scoring! McNair finished with 20 points and Pelham added 16! DePaul’s tough schedule this season make them a tough out for anyone! Joe’s will have to regroup to continue play in the Bergen County Jamboree!
