Kennedy Beats Prep in O.T. 76-68
Sophomore Dawon Lighty (14pts.) three point play with 1:00 left and layup with 35 seconds helped Kennedy get into overtime and go on to win 76-68 against Don Bosco Prep. With a minute left, down 3, Lighty drove down the middle for a layup and was fouled on the play. After converting a free throw to tie it 59-59, Kennedy got the ball back and went ahead on a Daquere Hayes backdoor pass to Lighty. Prep got the ball down 61-59 and isolated a play for sophomore sensation Vaughn Gray (22pts.) who tied it on a baseline layup. Kennedy pulled away in overtime and held on behind the clutch free throw shooting of Asmar Edwards (16pts., 6rebs.) Shondell Stewart led the Knights in scoring with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Gray led Prep, while Brandon Beckford added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Kennedy Blasts DePaul 88-64
Kennedy again brought the pressure in their 88-64 blowout of DePaul and limited star player Justin Crosgile to 21 points, with most coming with the outcome decided. Shondell Stewart led Kennedy with 26 points, Asmar Edwards added 19 points and 7 assists and Dawon Lighty dropped in 12 as the Knights took a 23-9 1st quarter lead and never looked back, at one point leading by 34 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. Matthew Miller had 11 for Depaul and freshman Davon Jacobs showed a promising future with 6 points.
Eastside Defeats West Milford 84-76
David Robertson-West and Karon Abraham combined for 56 points as this dynamic duo held off a late run by West Milford H.S. to win 84-76. West finished with 36 points as he muscled has way to the basket time and time again. Abraham meanwhile, finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals and made the smart decision throughout. Eastside has won 6 straight since starting the season losing their first 4 games. They meet Passaic H.S. tomorrow. West Milford fought the whole way and cut a 10 point lead to 5 with 2:02 seconds left on a Jason Sofman (17 pts. 8 rebs.) three and a Chad Houser (29 pts. 8 rebs.) two. The Ghost held on by making free throws late and getting a lay up off an Abraham steal. Bryant Lewis (12 pts., 5 assts., 3stls.) and Allen Dantzler (10 pts. 9 rebs.) each played solid individual games.
