Hampton, Virginia…………….The Playaz Basketball Club A.A.U. program ran by Jimmy Salmon  took it’s show on the road to the prestigious Boo Williams A.A.U. Tournament in Hampton, Virginia and proved that it is one of the best programs in the country. The Playaz 15’s went down and won 6 games enroute to the Boo Williams ” CHIP”in their age group. Meanwhile, The Playaz 17’s team is part of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League that will determine the top teams that will compete in this years Peach Jam in North Augusta, South Carolina to determine a true A.A.U. champion. They began their quest by going 5-0 in the first of three tournaments. They will also play in Houston and Los Angeles. Going against some of the top teams in the country, the 17’s look like they will be in the hunt the whole way playing some special basketball down here!  (Boo Williams pictured left)

Playaz 15’s Beat Mean Street  55-53 In Boo Williams Final !

The Playaz 15’s will be a team to deal with again this a.a.u. season as they are picking up where they left off as 14 year olders. They took on a very tough Mean Street team out of Chicago who features one of the top ranked players in the country in 6’8 Alex Foster. the Playaz more than handled him and his teammates. Trailing early in the 1st half , the Playaz took the initial hit and then battled back behind the play of 6’6 Reggie Cameron (Paterson Catholic) who finished the contest with 17 points. As Cameron kept them in the game, it was only a matter of time for his teammates to come with him. 6’3 Shacore Edwards (Irvington) scored 17 of his 20 points in the 2nd half and showed the athleticism that’s  going to open eyes in this a.a.u. season. 5’11 point guard Kavon Stewart( Paterson Catholic)) got to the basket with the game tied at 53 and drew a foul, where he calmly knocked down two free throws that proved to be the game winner! Meanwhile they also got a solid effort from 6’1 Josh Marquez( DePaul H.S.) whose hustle and willingness to do the dirty work is probably the key to this teams success. The trademark of this team, along with the 17 year old team is the unselfish play and from the early results it seems like the perfect formula.

      The Skinny on the 15’s:

Shacore Edwards #10 – Had a great tournament and opened up many eyes during the week! Averaged 15 during the weekend and took over in the 2nd half of championship game!

Reggie Cameron #2 – Also shined throughout the weekend as his reputation as  one of best shooters in his class  with unlimited range was justified throughout. Could not be left alone! Averaged a team high 18 points for the weekend!

Kavon Stewart #3 – Showed why he is considered one of the best point guards in his class. Ran the show to perfection, having his best game in the quarterfinals against Long Island Lightning from New York!

Joshua Marquez #23 – This kid maximizes his talent to the fullest. Is always giving his all and has now become a more consistent jump shooter! Can not be slept on!

Amir Maddred#34 –  The 6’7 St. Patricks freshman is improving every day. Nice post up game and ability to knock down the mid range jumper. When not in foul trouble had a fine weekend!

Jordan Arthur #40 – The 6’8 big man got better as the weekend went on and the team would not have won without his contribution. Play of weekend was his follow up dunk over a defender in the semi finals against the Gauchos from New York!

DeAndre Noble #1 -The Paterson Catholic player gave quality minutes off the bench. Showed his athleticism, especially defensively and knocked down the open jumper when available!

Connor Cuccinelli #42- The 6’4 swingman from St. Mary’s H.S. has done a good job spelling Edwards and Cameron and has had moments, particularly his 10 point game in the quarters against Long Island Lightning.

PLAYAZ 17’s DO THEIR THING AT BOO!

From the first night when Paterson Catholic’s 5’9 guard Myles Mack sliced up the host Boo Williams A.A.U. team until St.Peters Prep 6’0 guard Miles Davis lit the gym up from the perimeter against the Mac Irvin Fire from Chicago, the Playaz 17 year old team made noise to start play in the Elite Youth Basketball League. In between the M and M boys was the off the charts play of  6’8 Paterson Catholic sophomore Kyle Anderson and 6’5 Don Bosco Prep junior Vaughn Gray. Not to mention the athleticism of New Egypt 6’10 Desmond Hubert, Derrick Randall(Paterson Catholic) and Jarrod Davis( Lakewood) and the solid floor play of St. Peter’s Prep Kevin Walker. The Playaz looked great in their quest to be one of the 24 best A.A.U. squads so they will be invited to the Peach Jam. This weekend was a great start! Next E.Y.B.L. tournament will be in Houston in three weeks!

The Skinny On The 17’s:

Myles Mack – Had a great weekend and again showed that it’s the heart in the player that counts the most! The 5’8 guard challenged the bigs and lit up the guards. Has the uncanny ability to rise to the occasion when he’s needed most. Had 32 against Boo Williams!

Kyle Anderson – Was the key to alot of the Playaz runs this weekend. Can get to the lane easily and his length makes it almost impossible to stop him there. Has improved his range and all you have to do when watching a player is check the score when they play ,then check it when they sit. He is a winner!

Myles Davis – When this kid got hot this weekend he was almost unguardable from the perimeter. Had a 27 and a 32 point game, but was not one dimensional. Put it on the floor a few times to keep them honest and actually distributed the ball well!

Vaughn Gray – People keep sleeping on this 6’5 baller, but they couldn’t miss him this weekend as he was tremendous. He went to the basket strong and knocked down the midrange jump shot. The scary part is there is still so much upside to his game!

Desmond Hubert – When you watch the things Hubert can do athletically you honestly can picture this kid in the league! Of course he has a long way to go but the kid has freaky athleticism. Had eye opening moments throughout the weekend. As his midrange gets better, Watch out!

Jarrod Davis – Believe it or not, as good an athlete as Desmond is, Jarrod might be the best one on the squad. Can get to the bucket at will and can knock down the jump shot!

Derrick Randall – Still a beast inside. He was relentless on the boards this weekend and he had to be going against some of the best big men in the country!

Kevin Walker – Is a true playmaker who seems to have found his niche with this deep squad. Will be depended on more as the a.a.u. season goes on!
